Application Of Magnesium Sulfate in Obstetrics

Magnesium sulfate is colorless columnar or needle-like fine crystals, usually needle-like. It has a cool, salty and bitter taste and is odorless. Density 2.65g/cm3. Heptahydrate is stable in humid air below 48°C. Easily weathered in warm, dry air. At 48~68℃, it becomes monoclinic hexahydrate salt MgSO4·6H2O, above 68, it becomes monohydrate salt MgSO4·H2O (monoclinic crystal system), and at 200~300℃, it becomes white powder anhydrous. Above 450℃, it is partially decomposed into MgO. It can contain 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 12 molecules of crystal water. But those containing 2, 4, 5 molecules of crystal water are unstable. It is easily soluble in water (119.8%, 20℃) and glycerol, and the aqueous solution is neutral. Slightly soluble in ethanol.

Function and efficacy

Magnesium sulfate is an electrolyte that can prevent and treat hypomagnesemia. In addition, magnesium sulfate can also prevent and treat preeclampsia and epilepsy caused by high blood pressure in pregnant women.

Manufacturing method

1. It is obtained by adding sulfuric acid to natural magnesium carbonate (magnesite), removing carbon dioxide, and recrystallization.

2. It is obtained by dissolving Kieserite (MgSO4·H2O) in hot water for recrystallization. 3. Made from seawater.

Use

Magnesium sulfate can be used as nutritional supplement; curing agent; flavor enhancer; processing aid. The brewing additive supplements the magnesium in the brewing water as a nutrient source during fermentation to improve the fermentation capacity. Improve the flavor of synthetic sake (0.002% dosage). Adjust the hardness of the water. Used in Europe to produce "Burton" type beers. It is often used in combination with calcium salts for brewing water. Adding 4.4g/100l of water can increase the hardness by 1 degree, and it will produce bitter taste and odor of hydrogen sulfide.
